Racism
Have I become desensitized to it?
I was talking to Y about what happened to me the other day
K: I went to the mail center earlier today to get my debit card - I have money again, yaayy!
Y: Good, now you can pay me back for everything
K: Now with slightly less enthusiasm Uhh, yeahh. Oh, when I got my package the guy working downstairs was like "xie xie" (thank you in Chinese). Oh and earlier when I went to flatpatties (restaurant) I walked up to order and the guy told me "No, we don't sell sushi here".
Y: Isn't that racist?
K: I don't know a pause to think, I thought he was just joking around, because when my order came in he called out "one sushi!" And when he saw Spanish girls he spoke to them in Spanish.
Perhaps the people who do these things don't realize that it can be offensive, especially because I am not Japanese and the mailroom guy had no way of knowing I was Chinese either. After I got my first package I went right back to get another one and this time around he was much more subdued and bade me "a good day". Perhaps it's just easier to come out with these "funny" race-related things to say when you know you won't see that person again.
On a slightly related note - after a Chinese Student Association party there were comments written on the wall with the highlighters provided for the blacklight party.

Really, Harvard? They were drunk and they would probably never see any of these people again. I'm desensitized, they're desensitized. I wonder if this makes me no better than them.
I want to be angry - I really do. But, what is there to do? I know the majority of Harvard students don't think or act this way, but taking fingerprints and tracking these disgusting vandals down to their rooms and making them see the light is just not possible.
To their credit, they knew this party was hosted by a Chinese association.
